Cristian C. Baeza

 

Dr. Cristian C. Baeza is the Director for Health, Nutrition and Population (HNP) at the World Bank. As Director of HNP, Cristian leads the HNP practice of the World Bank globally and represents the World Bank in HNP matters internationally including representing the Bank at the Board of a large number of multilateral partnerships such as  GAVI, The Global Fund, PNMCH, IFPRI, HMN, and other. The World Bank HNP Practice serves country clients in more than 80 countries and oversees and manage a portfolio of 140 active large programs for a total of more than $15 billion and annual new commitments in engagements and lending of $3.5 to $4.5 billion a year.

Previously to rejoining the World Bank in 2010, Dr. Baeza was a Partner in McKinsey and Company leading the Global Health Systems Financing group (Health Systems Policy, Financing, and Health Insurance) with particular focus on the design and implementation of national health financing systems, insurance arrangements, and the management of their fiscal, labor and macroeconomic implications.

Prior to his work at McKinsey & Co and the World Bank, Dr. Baeza was CEO of the Chilean National Health Insurance Fund (FONASA), Senior Health Systems and Health Insurance Specialist for Social Security Policy and Development at the International Labor Organization (ILO) in Geneva, Switzerland, and co-editor of the World Health Report 2000 on health Systems Performance at WHO headquarters in Geneva.

Dr. Baeza's passion for supporting country  efforts  to improve health conditions around the world, particularly in emerging markets, has taken him  to develop extensive senior advisor experience in more than 40 countries in Latin America, Middle East, North Africa, Eastern Europe, and Asia as well as to collaborate with many multilateral (WHO, ILO, GAVI, GLOBAL FUND, PMNCH), bilateral (USAID, DFID, NORAD, CIDA), and foundation (GATES, ROCKEFELLER) organizations.
